Fixing holes in drywall

First of all, you need to assess the damaged area. Therefore, if the hole in the wall is larger than 4”, then you need to make it square or rectangle and install a backing support. Nevertheless, before doing all these steps, you really need to check if behind the hole are pipes or electric cables, otherwise you might make the damage even worse.

After making sure there are no obstacles behind the hole, check if the back paper layer is in a good condition and mark the outline of the hole on the front paper layer.

Cutting out the hole

In order to obtain a professional result, you have to use a pencil and an L-square. In this manner, you ensure the corners of the hole are right angled. The next step of the project is to cut out the damaged area, along the cut lines. Use a drywall saw or a keyhole saw, to get the job done accurately, especially that you can find this tool at any diy store under 5 dollars.

Useful Tip: Do not hurry or use too much force, otherwise you might damage the edges of the hole.

Measuring the hole in drywall

Afterwards, measure the height and the width of the hole, using a measuring tape.

Inserting a screw into the backing support

We need to know the height of the hole as to cut the backing support. As a general rule, you should cut the support from 1×2 or 1×3  lumber and make it about 2” larger than the height of the hole. After performing the hole with a jigsaw, we need to fit a drywall screw in the middle of the wooden support.

Useful Tip: You need to insert the screw into the support as to fit it easily into place, as well as to hold it while driving in the screws trough the wall in the backing support.

Fitting the backing support

Fit the backing support inside the hole and center it properly. Meanwhile get a drill machinery with torque control, in order to lock the support into place with screws.

Attaching the backing support to the wall

Hold the backing support into place while driving screws trough the wall, at both ends of the wooden strip. Make sure you don’t over-tighten the screws, otherwise you might damage the surface of the wall. Nevertheless, the head of the screws should be just under the wall’s surface.

After securing the backer board to the wall, you should remove the screw placed at the middle. If you have followed our instructions and you have worked with good judgement, you are ready to cut out the patch.

Cutting the patch

In order to get the job done properly, we recommend you to use a drywall scrap piece of the same thickness as the wall. This aspect is essential, otherwise the patch won’t be at the same level with the rest of the wall.

Mark the outline of the patch on the drywall sheet and cut it gently with the drywall saw. Make sure you don’t damage the edges or the paper layers, while making the cut.

How to fix a large hole in drywall

Fit the paper layer into place and check if the gaps between it and the wall are no larger than 1/4”, otherwise you have to cut a new piece, this time properly. Moreover, you don’t have to force the patch to fit into place, as you might damage it easily.

Continue the project by securing the patch to the backing support with several screws. As we have already emphasized, the head of the screws should be slightly under the surface of the wall.

Covering the patch with fiberglass mesh

Cut several pieces of fiberglass mesh and cover the patch, as in the image. Alternatively, you could also use drywall paper, but over the time we have got better result with the fiberglass mesh. Make sure the strips overlap a little, otherwise the compound might crack on the long run.

Useful Tip: The fiberglass mesh has adhesive on side, so you can stick it to the wall easily. Cover all the edges with tape, before preparing the drywall compound.

Mixing drywall compound

Pour a small quantity of water in a clean bucket, before adding the drywall compound powder. Let it soak some water, before mixing it thoroughly, as to activate the molecules in the compound. Dump the powder gradually, otherwise the compound will be lumpy.

Useful Tip: Use a small putty knife to mix the mud, until you get the consistency of tooth paste. If the drywall compound doesn’t slip off the knife and it isn’t lumpy, it is ready to use.

Spreading the first step of compound

The next step of the project is to spread the first coat of drywall mud over the patch. Use a small putty knife to make the layer as smooth and even as possible. Pay attention to the transition between the patch and the wall, otherwise the repair will be noticeable.

Fixing a large hole in drywall

It is almost impossible to get the job done with just one layer, therefore you shouldn’t be worried if the surface has some irregularities. Use a 6″ drywall knife to spread the mud evenly. Let the mud to set up a little, before spreading the second coat.

10'' putty knife

After the first coat has dried a little, you should apply the second layer of mud. In order to get the job done in a professional manner, we recommend you to use a 8-10” wide putty knife. Apply the drywall compound as even as possible, making sure there are very few irregularities on the surface.

Useful Tip: If you cannot make the transition between the patch and the wall even, then you have to apply another thin coat. Apply the compound in a “+” pattern.

Letting the mud to dry out

After spreading the mud over the patch, you should let it dry out overnight. You should remember that compound that has set up, isn’t completely dried out. Therefore, you need for at least 8 hours before sanding the surface.

How to fix a large hole in drywall

Last but not least, you have to smooth the patch with fine grit sandpaper (anything between 100 and 120). Therefore, after the mud has dried out properly, you need to sand the patch thoroughly, using circular moves. Make sure the transition between the patch and the rest of the wall is gradual, otherwise you need to spread a new coat of mud.

Useful Tip: Clean the dust with a dry cloth and apply the primer. Afterwards, paint the large patch with the matching color.

Useful Tip: Clean thoroughly the damaged area before fitting the patch. In addition, mark the area and cut it out, as to obtain a square hole. When cutting the patch, make sure the drywall has the same thickness as the wall, otherwise the surface won’t be even.

How to fix holes in drywall

Marking the cut lines

The first step of the project is to mark the cut lines around the damaged area. If you make the hole square, it will be a lot easier to patch it in a professional manner. In order to draw the square around the hole, we recommend you to use an L-square and a pencil. Work with good judgement and with great care, as to make sure the corners are right-angled.

Useful Tip: Check if there are studs, pipes or electric cables before making the cuts.

Cutting out the hole

Afterwards, cut out the square hole in the wall, using a drywall saw (you can buy it from any diy store at no more than 5 dollars). Cut out the damaged are along the lines, making sure you don’t tear the edges. Just remember that the more accurate the cut, the more invisible will be the repair.

Before installing the patch, you should remove any loose paper or plaster around the edges of the hole.

It is essential to pay attention to this step, otherwise the repair might not be as accurate as planned.

Fitting the backing support

Next, you need to cut a small strip of wood (1×2 lumber will do just fine) about 3” larger than the hole. Make sure the strip is in good condition, otherwise it won’t support the patch properly. Drive in a drywall screw in the middle of the strip and fit it inside the hole.

Hold the backing support locked into place, while driving in screws trough the drywall at the ends of the strip. Use an electric screwdriver with torque control to get the job done quickly.

Fixing drywall holes

Cut out a small patch from a piece of drywall having the same thickness as the wall. This is an essential aspect when fixing holes in drywall, often overlooked by amateur handymen. Make sure the patch will fit properly in the hole, but in the same time the gaps should not be larger than 1/12”.

Place the patch in the hole and secure it to the backing support with a couple of drywall screws. Countersink the screws just below the surface of the drywall.

Cutting the fiberglass mesh

Cut several pieces of fiberglass mesh to reinforce the edges of the patch. You could use as well drywall paper, but we have always obtained better results with the nest. Measure the size patch, before cutting the fiberglass. Unroll the mesh and cut the piece 1” larger than the hole on all sides, with an utility knife.

Applying fiberglass mesh over the joints

The fiberglass mesh has adhesive on one side, therefore it will stick to the wall easily. Before fitting the net to the wall, you have to make sure the the pieces are large enough to cover the edges of the patch. As you can see in the image, you should use four pieces of paper.

Useful Tip: Although in this preliminary stage the damaged area doesn’t look too neat, we assure you that after you get the job done, you won’t even notice the patch.

Mixing drywall compound

Next, pour small quantity of water in a bucket, before adding the drywall compound powder. Let the water to activate the additives in the powder, before mixing it. In order to prepare a compound without lumps, hold the bucket with one hand, while mixing the mud with a putty knife.

Useful Tips: In order to check if the mud has the right consistency, you should make sure it doesn’t falls off the knife. If the drywall compound doesn’t slip off the knife and it isn’t lumpy, you can spread it on the wall.

Applying the first coat of mud

In order to get the job done as a professional, you should apply several coats of compound. Therefore, even if the first coat doesn’t look even, you shouldn’t worry too much, as you will make it look properly after applying the second coat.

If the patch is larger than 2”, we strongly recommend you to use a 6” wide putty knife. Embed the fiberglass mesh in the compound and make sure you remove the air pockets. Let the mud to dry out properly, before going to the next step.

Applying the second coat of mud

Afterwards, you have to let the compound set up a little, for about 10 minutes. Meanwhile, you have to mix the compound in the bucket and add water, as it will harden quickly.

Apply the second coat of mud over the patch, paying attention to the transition between the wall and the patch. In addition, make sure the repaired surface is as smooth as possible. If you aren’t satisfied with the result, then you have to apply a third coat. Let the mud to harden overnight.

How to fix holes in drywall

If the surface is really smooth and the transition between the fixed area and the rest of the wall is unnoticeable, you will save time on sanding. Therefore, use 100-grit sandpaper and a block to make the surface as uniform and smooth as possible. Don’t forget to wear a respiratory mask during the sanding stage, as there will be a lot of dust and debris.

Fixing dents in the wall

How to fix a dent in drywall

First of all, you need to assess the damaged area. Therefore, check if the dent is shallow or it goes beyond the gypsum, the back paper layer being also affected. In case you deal with a superficial cavity, then you can get the job done easily, as you just need to clean the area and fill it with drywall compound.

On the other hand, if the dent is serious, you could fill it and apply fiberglass mesh over the area, or simply remove it and install a new patch.

Cleaning the dent

The next step of this diy project is to clean the surface with great care, by using a regular utility knife. Therefore, you have to remove the damaged paper layer from the cavity and to clean the gypsum residues. Work with great care and attention, otherwise you could make the dent even more serious than it already is.

If the dent is 1/2” or less in depth, it is just an easy fix process. Otherwise, you have to install a  small path,as to prevent the repaired area from cracking.

Sanding around the hole

Afterwards, you should prepare the surface adjacent to the dent. Therefore, use a sand-block and 120-grit sandpaper to remove the pain coats around the damaged are. Work with good judgement, otherwise you could affect the paint on a larger surface than actually needed.

By removing the paint around the dent, the compound will bond properly to the paper layer. Use a dry cloth or a vacuum to clean the residues, before filling the cavity with mud.

Preparing drywall mud

Next, prepare a small quantity of drywall compound in a small bucket. Therefore, pour a small quantity of water in the bucket, before adding the drywall compound powder. Let it soak some water, before mixing it thoroughly. In this manner, the water will activate the molecules in the compound.

Useful Tip: Don’t dump the powder all at once, as you might end up with lumpy mud. Use a small putty knife to take the powder from the bag. Place the tools on a newspaper, to protect the flooring.

Mixing drywall compound

Hold the bucket into place with one hand, while mixing the mud with the putty knife. Mix the mud a little and add more powder. Repeat the process until you get the right consistency. In order to know if the mud has the right consistency, you should check if it falls off the knife. If the drywall compound doesn’t slip off the knife and it isn’t lumpy, it is ready to use.

Useful Tip: Make sure you apply the compound, before it dries out. Wash the tools with water, after mixing the mud.

Applying-plaster-on-a-trowel

Use a trowel and a putty knife to check if the mud has the right consistency. If you buy joint compound which is already mixed, you might have to thin it a little with water.

Filling the dent with compound

Fill the dent with compound, by using a putty knife. This will be the first coat, therefore it shouldn’t be thick at all. Don’t spread the compound on a large surface, otherwise you will have to paint the hole area again. Move the putty knife over the patch, to level the surface.

Useful Tip: If the damaged area is small, then you don’t have to use a large putty knife, otherwise you will spread the compound on a larger surface than needed.

Fixing the dent in drywall

If you use the right instructions, the damaged are should look similar to the one in the image. Let it set up for a couple of minutes before going to the next step.

If the dent is shallow and the gypsum layer is not damaged, you can skip the next step: installing the fiberglass mesh. Nevertheless, in our case the dent was deep, so we decided to install the mesh and to prevent possible cracks that might come up on the long term.

Cutting the fiberglass mesh

Cut a small piece of fiberglass, in order to cover the dent. Measure the size of the dent, before cutting the paper. Unroll the mesh and cut a the piece 1/2” larger than the hole on all sides, using an utility knife.

Useful Tip: The mesh has adhesive on one side, therefore it will stick to the wall easily. Make sure the mesh is large enough to cover the edges of the patch, otherwise fit several pieces of fiberglass paper over the damaged surface.

Pressing the fiberglass mesh

Center the mesh over the dent and press it gently with the putty knife. Make sure you embed the fiberglass mesh tape properly, and try to eliminate the air pockets. Go several times over the patch and smooth it out. Nevertheless, remember that this is the first coat, so it doesn’t have to look perfect.

Useful Tip: Let the compound to set up for about 10 minutes, while you should prepare another batch of drywall mud.

6'' wide putty knife
6” wide putty knife

The next step of the project is to spread the second coat of compound. Therefore, apply the compound over the patch, trying to make the transition between the repaired area and the rest of the wall, as smooth as possible. The second coat should be larger than the first one, to smooth the transition between the wall to the patch.

Useful Tip: If the surface is still rough, even after spreading the second coat, you need to apply another layer of mud. Don’t forget to let the second coat mud to dry out overnight, before applying another layer.

Sanding the patch

Let the mud to dry out properly, before sanding the surface with medium-grit and fine-grit sandpaper. Use the sand-block to smooth over all the edges and remove any regularities. Use you hand to feel if the surface is perfectly even. If you are not satisfied with the result, clean the residues and apply a thin layer or mud.
